Penang Road Chendol

I came here with some relatives who came back from America for a visit.

They wanted to fill their tummies with as much Malaysian food as possible before flying back. And when we sent them to catch their flight in Penang, it became a chance to go eating around. Our relatives used to patronise the stalls at Penang Road many long years ago... And so there we went.

Penang Road Chendol.
I wonder what's with the crazy long queue for the cendol. Uncle and auntie queued, so we queued. Wasted my calories!!! Imagine the palm syrup and coconut milk! That's my sugar quota for the day! That makes me so geram leh.

After wasting my calories at the roadside Penang Road Chendol, we walked a Penang Road 'Chendul' shop. More regrets.

The Penang Nyonya Otak was the only thing we nodded our heads. Soft custardy steamed fish with the right amount of spice and seasonings.

Laksa... Better go eat elsewhere, seriously

Rojak , like that only. Okla, so so.

So what made this place so popular, with all the proof pasted on the walls??

Maybe I'm too dumb.
I don't know and I don't understand.

Tim Ho Wan @ KL

I came here today... Thinking the queue is going to be crazy....

I arrived at 6, saw around 15 people queuing... Not that bad eh. But my friend won't be arriving yet. And so... I came back again at 6.30pm... Darn! More than double are waiting. My friend and I just queued up and chatted as we waited. It's been many years since we last had a catch up. And it took us around 30 minutes to get a table. Not too bad :-)

Tenka Noshoku @ Kuale

Tenka Noshoku..... Deliciousness on Earth :-)

Kuala Kangsar is a district with many small villages all around. And one of them is Jerlun.

Most of the villagers are of Chinese ethnicity working in the agriculture sector, mainly rubber estates. Nowadays many no longer follow the ways of the parents and have ventured elsewhere to seek employment.

Gee Seng Seafood @ Bukit Tambun, Prai

Rustic seafood restaurant, on the river banks. Not the most beautiful restaurant in the area, but definitely the busiest. The other restaurants are like... Swatting flies and this restaurant is fully occupied. There must be a reason but we have never dared to find out why :-)

We just stuck here for 7 years.

Peng Hwa Lok Lok @ Penang

.... And this isn't fully laid out yet!!!

Lok lok is steamboat on skewers. I love steamboat but find lok lok to be costlier than regular steamboat. That is the main deterrent for me to indulge.

But whenever I come to Penang, I yearn for Lok lok, because of the affordability and the type of things they offer. The last time I had it here at Peng Hwa was 8 years ago, before I had my first baby. Now that all 3 kids are bigger, we try to bring them and eat hawker food, rather than just staying in 'child friendly, air conditioned' places.

Village BBQ Steamboat @ Bandar Puteri, Puchong

I'm a steamboat fan, especially buffet steamboats.

I came here with a few of my buddies and we can say that we ate our money's worth.  We sat at the upper level. Not as crowded, but warmer.

Praises:
1. Fresh!! Crabs, prawns, fish, meat , all fresh !! There's mussels, scallops, lots of fresh prawns and crab, clams, snails, perfect if you're a fan of seafood.
2. Bathroom is clean.

Not so happy:
1. Vegetables not cleaned. We took the 'tong Ho' into the bathroom and washed away the sand.
2. The 'plates' were limited. Use only what is given, no clearing, no extra clean plates.

As for taste.... It's always subjective. We like the chicken wings, the satay skewers, but didn't enjoy the foil wrapped fish.

Kelantanese Fare @ Kuale

I don't know much about the food in town as my hubs don't really go looking around for new stuff. But I'm very much the opposite and love to try new things at new places. Even though sometimes the food isn't much to my own liking.... But at least I now know that it's that way.

My colleague told me about this place just two days ago, because she knew I love Malay food.

Here's what we had.

Nasi kerabu. It's rice tinged blue with blue clitoria flower and this one looks like they used the real thing instead of cheating with blue food dye. Plus points for that. It comes with a topping of raw veggies, fish flakes, toasted coconut, raw chilli paste and not forgetting the yummy budu. Budu is the Kelantanese version of fish sauce.

My portion (RM 4) came with a stuffed chilli known as Solok Lada. My ex colleague in  Pahang, who is a Kelantanese royalty ( she has a formal title on her name) once told me that the chilli is only a vessel to hold the fish paste. It's ok to not eat the chilli. Fish crackers and other condiments are optional and incurs additional payment.

Best Tosai in Kuale

I've past by countless times throughout my 7 years stay in this town and never knew what's here in this shoddy place. Never judge a book by it's cover.

And when my colleague told me that this place serves the best tosai in town..... I must go there soon.

Prices are affordable and food is good.

Vietnamese Food at Yi Kun Food Store @ Taiping

I don't know the history of this kopitiam but now they serve Vietnamese fare. We didn't intend to eat here, but in a food court in Taiping town.

The moment we got down the car, I saw this restaurant opposite the road... And my mother in law and I got interested immediately. They offer dining options with dishes or noodles.

We were pretty satisfied with the food and the final bill was less than RM45 with drinks included.

My husband didn't finish his meal as he can't stand the heat. But without the sambal he said it's not as good.

We had these

Saw this shop and stopped our car.
I've only heard about it before and I never had Taiwanese dessert before.

This is the view from the shop.
